Because of all the rain today, my schedule changed and I was let off the hook for video duty. Shot stills at a game in stead. But because of the rain, using my flash was out of the question, for a couple of reasons. First of all, keeping a camera dry is tough enough without the flash popping out from the top. The other reason is that light from a flash bouncing off raindrops make for very lousy photos. Even a few drops of rain being illuminated by a flash would make it seem like the game was being played in a blizzard. So in stead I shot the game (on my work-issued Canon EOS 1D Mark II) at ISO 1600, f2.8, 1/320. Really, really dark. Here's an example of what that looks like straight out of the camera:
Now after some tinkering:
And now my personal preference, in black and white:
To be honest, this is one of the better lit fields in our area. The light is uneven, and the end zones (that shot was a touchdown) are even darker than the rest of the field, but most other fields would be nearly impossible to shoot at without a flash. These schools spend all this money on turf and stands and sound systems ... and light the field so no one can see it! Anyway, here's another shot from tonight. Thanks for looking!
